Aongatete is a special forest where northern forest species meet southern forest species to make a very diverse mix. Blue duck and kokako were part of the rich wildlife only decades ago. Unfortunately they are now extinct from uncontrolled predation by introduced pests. Our volunteers are doing a wonderful job of pest control and restoration.
The restoration project is a demonstration of what can be achieved with comprehensive pest management of the Kaimai forest park and what it should look and sound like with native bird song.
In the future we aim to re-introduce whiteheads and kokako but have started with weka which may or may not succeed being flightless and vulnerable to dogs, stoats and ferrets!
